Stell dir vor, du wohnst in einem abgelegenen Kaff. Irgendwann taucht eine alte Frau auf, die ursprünglich aus deinem Dorf stammt und es vor vierzig Jahren verlassen hat. Jane ist mittlerweile unermesslich reich. Sie möchte allen Dorfbewohnern zu Wohlstand und Reichtum verhelfen, und zu einem glückseligen Leben für alle sorgen. Die Bedingung: Jemand aus dem Dorf muss Joe töten! Natürlich sind zunächst alle empört und wollen mit dem „Angebot“ nichts zu tun haben. Doch im Laufe der Zeit dreht sich der Wind.
Jane und Joe waren einst ein Paar. Sie verlor seinetwegen ihr Baby. Er bestach den Richter und leugnete alles. Das ganze Dorf stand auf Joes Seite und half ihm, seiner Strafe damals zu entkommen. Nun will sie Gerechtigkeit für ihr damals von Joe angetanes Unrecht.
Die Geschichte kommt dir wahrscheinlich bekannt vor, wenn du dich an deine Schulzeit erinnern kannst. Joe must die ist die Rockadaption des Theaterstücks Der Besuch der alten Dame vom schweizerischen Schriftsteller Friedrich Dürrenmatt. Natürlich kannte ich Dürrenmatt nicht persönlich, aber ich glaube, auch er hat sich und seine Leser bzw. Zuschauer gefragt:
Würdest du für sehr viel Geld einen Verbrecher umbringen?
